According to the CDC, about 235,000 US adults are injured in the bathroom each year, with about 14% of the injured actually requiring hospitalization! More than two-thirds of these bathroom injuries occur in the bathtub or shower, with the majority happening while getting in or out of the tub or shower.

Think about how many of those injuries could have been avoided if they just had a solid grab bar to hold onto.

If I accomplish nothing more than installing shower grab bars in your tubs and showers, I would be a happy man. I think every bathtub and shower in America (or the world for that matter) should have shower/tub grab bars.

It's such an easy thing to install and offers the only real security from falls in the tub or shower. I have installed them in houses I was renting, free of charge, because they are so important to me.

A shower or tub grab bar brings stability and comfort when you are standing or seated in the shower/tub area. I am so comforted when I grab that rock-solid grab bar, knowing as long as I can hold onto it, I am safe from falling. Standing in a tub without something to hold onto, there is no stability. Often the abrasive strips on the bathtub floor are worn off or the plastic bath math is so old that it's more slippery than the tub itself. At best you can grab the nozzle or soapdish, which isn't much to hold onto, nor located in the best position, but when you want to bend over and wash your feet, there is nothing secure to grab.

Adding a grab bar would significantly reduce the chance of injuries from slipping in the shower/tub.  

Slips and falls are the leading cause of bathroom injuries, accounting for a significant percentage of all cases.
